The International Day for Older Persons was widely observed under the theme ‘The Journey to Age Equality’ in Manipur too.
International Day for older persons was observed on Tuesday at the multi-purpose hall of deputy commissioner’s office, Kangpokpi district.
The theme of the 2019 commemoration is ‘The Journey to Age Equality’.
Deputy commissioner Lalithambigai K of Kangpokpi district, additional deputy commissioner Lalramsang Infimate, sub divisional officer Paotimsei Kipgen of Island sub-division, president Seisat Kipgen of Senior Citizens Forum Kangpokpi and district social welfare officer (DSWO) N Usharani Devi attended the observation.
Speaking on the occasion, deputy commissioner Lalithambigai highlighted the importance of the observing the day and stated that old age is the period to enjoy for everyone.
She also stated that as per United Nations reports, by the year 2023 the total old age population of the world will be increased by 46 million and India will witness the increase of old age persons by 12 per cent of the total population.
Pointing out the importance of taking care of the old aged persons, she stated the younger generations should not leave their old aged parents alone and they should treat them with great care and affection.
The main purposes for observing this day is bringing about social transformation and economic development by utilizing the talent and experiences of older persons, she said.
She also thanked the older persons who attended the function and further appealed to them to directly approach the district administration in case they face any problem.
DSWO Kangpokpi Usharani stated that Social Welfare Department has rendered very good service in the district with very less staff and infrastructure since its inception in Saitu Gamphazol of the district.
She also added that the observance is a great opportunity to interact with the older persons and directly witness their grievances and problems.
The District Social Welfare office, Thoubal also observed the day with its deputy commissioner Thoubal N Bandana led officials attending the observation function at the counting hall of DC office Complex, Thoubal.
In her speech, the deputy commissioner Bandana said that older persons should not be marginalized and portrayed as a burden on the society.
But they should be loved, respected and appreciated for their guidance and contributions that they make to the society, she added.
She also said that pensions and other welfare schemes for the older people should be made available in time.
