In a bid to promote hygiene and community health among the adivasi women engaged in tea garden, a day-long health awareness meet was held at the community hall of Panery Tea Estate in Assam’s Udalguri district on Sunday.
The meet was held commemorating International Women’s Day.
The event was hosted under the joint initiative of Women’s cell of Assam College Teachers Association (ACTA) and Darrang-Udalguri zone of ACTA.
While Dr Babita Das, convenor of women’s cell, ACTA delivered the welcome address, Dr Manju Kalita, zonal convenor ACTA, anchored the meet.
The awareness programme was graced as resource person by Dr Mahesh Deka, former medical officer, Goodricke Tea Ltd. and Dr Barnali Deka of Mangaldai College.
Addressing the meet, Dr Deka shed light upon education and health aspects of the women folk of the tea garden area.
He also lauded the efforts of the Garden’s Mothers’ Club and ‘Meena’ (young girls) units on health and hygiene of the garden community which have been instrumental in bringing a revolution in the health and hygiene.
The other resource person Dr Barnali Deka dealt at length the importance of education and urged upon women community to take advantage of various health welfare related schemes of the government.
A local group of girls school children enthralled the gathering by presenting a Jhumur dance with a strong message against the menace of liquor, child marriage and ignorance.
The representatives of teachers’ units and women cells of five different colleges under the zone namely, Mangaldai, Sipajhar, Udalguri, Kharupetia and Tangla College also attended the meeting where the concluding speech and vote of thanks were offered by the president Darrang-Udalguri zone ACTA Dr Kailash Goswami.
