Hundreds of irate people laid siege in front of Merapani police station in eastern Assam’s Golaghat district on Sunday demanding immediate arrest of three youths who had allegedly beaten to death a middle aged woman at Negheribeel area along Assam-Nagaland border on Saturday.

Police said the three accused – Mubarak Ali, Habibur Ali and Yusuf Ali – of No 2 Negheribeel Gaon had allegedly assaulted the woman, identified as Hasina Begum, for protesting when the trio was allegedly abusing some girls who were part of a picnic party to Negheribeel.

Hasina succumbed to chest and head injuries she sustained after she was attacked with boulders by the three at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital in adjoining Jorhat district on Sunday.

The protesters took the body to the police station to demand the arrest of the accused. She was earlier treated at Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital here before being referred to JMCH, police said.

The woman’s husband, Mujibur Rahman, who was also assaulted by the three before attacking his wife, has been undergoing treatment at the civil hospital at Merapani. Mujibur and Hasina were working at their farm when the three started eve teasing and later tried to abuse the girls, police added.

The three have been stated to be absconding. However, an irate mob had allegedly assaulted Mubarak’s father and handed him over to police demanding that he be detained till his son and his accomplices surrender before police.
