Unidentified miscreants allegedly ransacked a mosque at Nayanpur in city’s Ganeshguri area on Sunday night, triggering tension in the area.

Eyewitnesses said a group six-seven youths vandalized the mosque located. Nayanpur is less than two kilometres from Dispur police station in Guwahati.

“A group of six-seven bike-borne youths forcefully entered the masque and broke the furniture of it,” said an eyewitness.

The incident took place at time when a section of people trying to communalise the recent rape cases in the state.

“The incident has occurred in such a time when certain elements are communalising the incidents of sexual violence taking place in the state,” said a local.

He said that there might have some design behind this incident. “It is hard to believe that the incident of masque vandalism and communalisation of rape are co-incidental. There must have a design behind it,” he said.

The state has witnessed sudden spurt in crime against woman with several cases of rape and molestation have been reported during last two weeks.

An 11-year-old class V student was gang-raped and killed at Lalunggaon under Bordowa police station in Nagaon district by three miscreants including two juveniles on March 23.
