With the aim to provide online education facilities to the poor students of Manipur amid the COVID-19 pandemic, transgender activist Santa Khurai has begun an online campaign.

Khurai came forward to help the kids in her neighbourhood after she came to know that a number of kids neither have access to the internet nor do they have a smartphone.

Khurai aims to raise Rs 2.25 lakh through the campaign and with the money the trans-woman activist hopes to buy smartphones for the kids.

Santa Khurai lives in the Khurai Sajor Leikai area in Imphal East district and there are around 200 families in her neighbourhood.

Due to the nationwide lockdown, schools are closed and the teachers are sending assignments through WhatsApp messages.

However, as most children in the neighbourhood don’t have access to a smartphone, their education is immensely hampered.

“I lend my personal phone to these students to get access to the lessons,” said Santa Khurai.

“But as I have only two phones, every parent is not able to note down the notes and assignments. With notes and assignments being sent daily, many are pending,” added Khurai.

The activist has been able to generate Rs 1.50 lakh so far from 44 supporters.

The fundraising campaign is being launched in Keto and interested persons can visit the link and donate an amount of their liking.
