A number of Congress leaders and workers, including Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) working president Zakir Hussain Shikdar, were detained by police for protesting in Guwahati against the “sale” of the country’s resources.
The other leaders, who were also detained by the police included Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) president Kamrul Islam Choudhury, APYC vice president Ratul Patowary, Indian Youth Congress national secretary Krishna Das and IYC secretary (in-charge) Ajay Chhikara.
They were detained from the protest site in front of the Rajiv Bhawan, the headquarters of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in Guwahati.
During the protest, the APCC, IYC, APYC leaders and other party workers shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre.
Raising their voice against the policies of the BJP-led government, the Congress leaders and workers protested against handing over government assets to private parties.
One of the posters read as “Stop selling the affordable rail travel of public.”
In posters and banners in Assamese and Hindi, it was written: “Stop selling the country”.
The police said they were detained for violation of the section 144 of the CrPC.
On Wednesday, the executive committee of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress Committee also organised a meeting at the Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati.
This was the first executive meeting of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress Committee organised after the Assam Assembly election 2021.
The executive meeting was held in presence of the executive president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, MLA Zakir Hussain Shikdar.
The APYC executive meeting was also attended by IYC secretary (in-charge) Ajay Chhikara, APYC president Kamrul Islam Choudhury.
The central government is all set to hand over the management of the Guwahati Airport, the biggest airport in the Northeast, to Adani Group by October.
The company’s employees will start working with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) staff at the airport to get familiarised with the task before the management is handed over to the private operator.
Only security and air traffic communication will be looked after by AAI, a media report quoted sources as saying.
