Giuseppe Conte has resigned as the Prime Minister of Italy.

Giuseppe Conte submitted his resignation to the Italy President Sergio Mattarella on Tuesday.

Giuseppe Conte quitting as Italy Prime Minister has paved the way for the President to conduct formal consultations to overcome the political crisis in hand.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella will start consultations with party leaders on Wednesday afternoon, the President’s office said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Giuseppe Conte has been asked by the President to stay on in caretaker capacity as consultations move forward.

Notably, Giuseppe Conte resigned as Italy Prime Minister in the hope of forming a new government after weeks of turmoil in his ruling coalition.

As per media reports from Italy, Conte will seek to form a new government to run Italy as it battles the COVID-19 pandemic.

Italy was the first European country to face the full wrath of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Over 85 thousand people have lost their lives due to COVID-19 in Italy thus far.
