In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics has been postponed and it will now be held from July 23, 2021, to August 8, 2021.

“The Olympics will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021. The Paralympics will be held from August 24 to September 5,” Tokyo 2020 chief Yoshiro Mori told reporters on Monday.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were due to begin on July 24 later this year and run for 16 days till August 8, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the first peace-time postponement of the Games.

Even though the International Olympic Association (IOA) and hosts Japan were hopeful of going ahead with the games, but the rapid spread of COVID-19 prompted the rescheduling of the mega event.

Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto said that the postponement of the games will add an extra financial burden on them.
