The fans of celebrated singer Zubeen Garg on Friday raised concerted voice here against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.

Local activists of Chatra Mukti Sangram Sammitee (SMSS), AJYCP and Kalita Janogasti Students’ Union also joined the protest rally. The rally that started from near the Bajali College passed through the town and culminated at NH-31 point here.

The protesters also blocked the National Highway 31 for some time and burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Naranda Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

More than hundred protestors led by fan club general secretary Joytish Patgiri and president Mrinmoy Pathak carried out the protest against the state and central government over the controversial bill.

Zubeen Garg has firmly opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. Attending a Bihu programme in Sonari, the singer even went on to say that one should tear up the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

“I firmly stand against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 which is, in my view, a grave threat to the core of Indian Constitution. I urge all the people of Assam to come together and fight back against this bill. We the people of Assam can by no means accept any more infiltrators here in our native land,” Zubeen had said.
