The Kokrajhar police on Sunday started investigation into a suspected case of rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in Gendrabil area of Kokrajhar district.

The charred body of the girl was recovered from a paddy field in Gendrabil area on Saturday evening.

The police along with District Magistrate of Kokrajhar on Sunday visited the spot and also the victim’s house as part of the investigation.

The Officer-in-Charge of Kokrajhar Police Station, Binanda Basumatary, said, “Mobile phone, kerosene drum and bottles were found from the spot where the body was recovered last evening.”

The police officer also said police have already started the investigation to find out the actual fact.

“We are investigation into the case to find out if it’s a murder or other related case,” he said.

The deceased, who was a resident of Ghoparapara village, had gone missing since Friday evening.

The family members and the locals suspect it to be a case of rape and murder.

Assam Social Welfare Minister Pramila Rani Brahma, who is also local MLA of Kokrajhar East No 30 constituency, has condemned the incident and demanded that the main culprits be arrested and be punished in a fast-tract manner.

Meanwhile, the All BTC Region and All Assam Nath Jogi Students’ Union gave a deadline of 48 hours to the district administration of Kokrajhar and police to nab the main culprits and threatened that if the district administration fails to arrest the accused persons then they would be compelled to launch a democratic agitation against the incident like dharna and bandh.
