A fast track court of West Tripura district on Friday sentenced a man of Assam’s Karimganj district to life imprisonment for reportedly trying to kill a housewife and her eight-year old child here in Agartala.

Lawyer representing the victim’s family, Arabinda Deb informed that this shocking incident took place on March 29, 2019.

A woman was living with her eight-year-old child in a house under East Agartala police station.

The accused Babul Shukla Baidya alias Bablu had met the woman on Facebook.

Soon a friendship developed between the two because of which Baidya began the victim’s house.

Nevertheless, the woman suspected that Baidya had bad intentions and forbade him from coming to her house.

On March 29, 2019, Baidy came to the Agartala from Karimganj and went straight to the victim’s house.

An altercation took place between the two and Baidya started attacking the woman with a sharp weapon.

When the eight-year old child came to save the mother, he was also attacked.

Both of them lost consciousness. Taking this opportunity, Baidya closed the door and fled from the spot.

Soon the woman regained consciousness and locals shifter the mother and child to a hospital, where they eventually recovered after treatment.

Later a case was filed in the East Agartala Women’s Police Station on this matter.

A total of 16 witnesses testified during the trial in the West Tripura district’s fast track court.

On Friday, the judge convicted the accused and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The judge also directed the legal authorities to provide financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the woman under the Women Victim Compensation Scheme.
