Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Friday strongly condemned the attack on former singer and BJP leader Babul Supriyo by some students of Jadavpur University in West Bengal.
Supriyo was shown black flags and heckled by some students of the university where he had gone to attend a seminar organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) which is the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Deb tweeted:
‘I strongly condemn the attack & manhandle on Union Minister, State @SuPriyoBabul at#JadavpurUniversity.I am shocked, a university is supposed to be learning ground, not breeding ground for extreme left hooliganism ! That’s why all over the India people have rejected Left parties.’
Supriyo was stopped from entering the university and was left waiting outside the gate for one –and- half hours from 2.30 pm by the Left student unions.
The BJP leader claimed that the students had physically tortured him by punching, kicking and pulling his hair.
He also claimed that the protesters tried to provoke him by openly referring to themselves as Naxals.
However, he managed to attend the seminar amid heavy security but had to face taunts again while preparing to leave the university.
While trying to find ways of leaving safely amidst the ruckus of the Left student unions, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, who is also the chancellor of the university went to his rescue.
Dhankar was also stopped by the protesting students at the gate of the university initially by the blockade of students but he managed to reach Supriyo and later both of them were able to leave the university in the late evening hours on Thursday.
