A day ahead of the release of the final draft of NRC, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday reiterated that if any genuine India citizen’s name is not figured in the draft NRC they should not be worried.

Speaking at a Mahila Samaroh at Sipajhar, Chief Minister Sonowal said that if any genuine India citizen’s name is left out of the draft NRC they should not be worried as they can enroll their names through the laid down procedures prescribed the Supreme Court.

Sonowal further said that a section of unscrupulous people are trying to spread disharmony in the society in the name of caste, religion.

He called upon the people not to pay any heed to such evil design as the government is committed to control such miss-information with iron hands. He also made it clear that any evil design to create disability using social-media would also invite legal actions.

Sonowal on Thursday had stated that no one will be treated as a foreigner if his or her name does not figure in the final draft.

Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also had said nobody’s rights and privileges will be curtailed if his or her name does not figure in the final draft of the NRC to be published on July 30.

“A draft is a draft. Nobody’s rights and privileges will be taken away on the basis of the draft NRC. No one will be sent to any detention camp,” Minister Sarma told reporters in Guwahati.

The union home ministry has also asked the Assam government not to take any action against those whose names do not figure in the NRC.

The first draft of the NRC was published during the intervening night of December 31 and January 1, containing 1.9 crore names out of total applications of 3.29 crore people in Assam.
