Human-elephant conflict in Chakmaghat area of Tripura’s Khowai district has become a major cause of worry.

Villagers of the area, on Thursday, blocked the national highway 8 demanding authorities to look into the matter.

Wild elephants from the Atgaramura forest range in Khowai district of Tripura have been wreaking havoc in the nearby villages by destroying agricultural fields and produce.

The protesting villagers accused the forest department of not addressing their issue, despite being apprised about the same several times.

The protestors comprising mainly of women gheraoed the office of Teliamura sub-divisional officer demanding steps to prevent entry of wild elephants into the villages.

The protestors also demanded compensation for the victims, who fell prey to elephant rampage.

However, after being assured by the administration that their grievances would be addressed, the protesting villagers lifted the blockade.
