A domestic elephant attacked a person, injuring him grievously on Tuesday in Teliamura in Tripura.
The victim, Ranjan Malakar was attacked while he had gone to collect water for his shop.
Malakar is the councilor of the 13th ward of Teliamura Municipal Council.
The elephant, which belonged to Abdul Mashui of Kailashahar was on its way to Taidu, when it suddenly began attacking Malakar who had also gone the same way to collect water.
The mahout was also with the animal when the incident occurred in front of a temple around 4:30 pm.

The elephant repeatedly hit the victim with its trunk and tusks, making him topple on the ground.
Locals immediately took the seriously injured Malakar to Teliamura Hospital, from where he was referred to the ILS Hospitals in Agartala.
Teliamura Municipal Council chairman Nitin Kumar Saha, sub-divisional forest officer, Krishna Gopal Roy, and a large force of Tripura State Rifles including Teliamura police rushed to the spot.
On the other hand, a mob attacked the mahout, Aftab Uddin, claiming that the elephant was able to attack the victim because of negligence on his part.
Wild tuskers had ventured into the Telimura sub-division last week and damaged crops and several houses, injuring one person in the process.
