Agartala: In Agartala, a shocking incident unfolded when a 23-year-old youth lost his life in a brutal attack by a shop owner, identified as Samrat Debnath.

The tragedy occurred in broad daylight on Friday in the Amtali area near Agartala city.

The West District Superintendent of Police, Kiran Kumar, provided details of the incident, revealing that the fatal confrontation stemmed from a heated argument between Samrat Debnath and the deceased, identified as Sayan Bhowmik.

The dispute revolved around comments made by Sayan about Samrat’s girlfriend.

“In the Amtali Bazar area near the Agartala-Sabroom National Highway, an intense altercation erupted between Samrat Debnath, owner of a tire shop, and Sayan Bhowmik, an employee of another adjacent shop. The heated exchange, centered around Samrat’s girlfriend, took a violent turn. In a fit of rage, Samrat assaulted Sayan on the head with a hammer and rod, causing him to collapse on the spot and succumb to the injuries,” explained the SP.

Eyewitnesses from nearby shops attempted to intervene, but Samrat’s possession of weapons deterred any immediate action.

The Amtali police station was alerted, prompting a swift response from a significant police force and a forensic team.

The victim’s body, lying in a pool of blood, was recovered and transported to Tripura Medical College and BRAM Teaching Hospital.

The police promptly apprehended Samrat Debnath, confiscated the weapons used in the crime, and presented him before the court, where they sought police remand for further investigation into the incident.

The tragic event underscores the need for swift and decisive action against such acts of violence within the community.
