The Sikkim National Law University Bill, 2018 has been passed by the House on the fourth day of the ongoing the Seventh Session of Ninth Assembly Budget Session 2018-19 of Sikkim Legislative Assembly on Friday.

The bill was introduced by the Minister for Human Resource Development Department, RB Subba on the second day of the assembly session on 7 March.

The Statement of Objects and Reasons of the bill mentioned that the bill was framed in order to establish a national level institution of excellence in the field of legal education and research in the State, it is deemed expedient to confer on Sikkim Government Law College with its rich heritage, the status of National Law University to enable it to function more efficiently as a teaching, training and research centre in law and for advancement and dissemination of legal knowledge.
