The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Navy.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud ruled that both men and women officers should be treated equally and ordered the Centre to comply with the order within three months.

The bench rejected the Centre’s stand that sea sailing duties cannot be granted to Short Service Commission (SSC) women officers of the Indian Navy .

“ The women officers can sail with the same efficiency as male officers,” it added.

Under SSC, women officers are entitled to serve a nation for a period of ten years.

Under permanent commission, the women officers will be entitled to serve for four more years totaling to fourteen years.

The apex court suggested that there is ample documentary evidence to suggest that women officers of the Indian Navy have brought accolades to the force.

It also granted pension benefits to women officers who have retired and were not granted permanent commission.

The judgement comes just a month after the apex court had allowed granting permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Army.
