Meghalaya chief electoral officer Frederick Kharkongor.

Poll-bound Meghalaya is requiring 107 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to be deployed in the upcoming Assembly polls.

Meghalaya chief electoral officer, Frederick Kharkongor told reporters here on Monday that the security requirement was projected before the Election Commission of India and the commission projected the same before the Union ministry of home affairs.

“We are waiting for the centre’s approval on this,” he said.

According to assessment, of the 3,082 polling stations spread across the 60 Assembly seats, 536 polling stations are considered ‘vulnerable’ because of possibilities of poll-related violence including threats from militants and 444 are ‘critical’ polling stations as there are chances of voters being forced to vote for a particular candidate, political rivalry among other reasons.

While 2025 polling stations are considered to be witnessing normal situation, another 67 polling stations are considered to be both ‘vulnerable and critical’.

Kharkongor said that the situation in polling stations is dynamic as it may change as the state approaches to the polling day.

He said that deployment of security during the election would be made based on the state and district plans in consultation with the election commission-appointed observers.
