GUWAHATI: Damp conditions are likely to persist for residents of Northeast, as a cyclonic circulation has formed over Assam, promising significant rainfall over Northeast states in the coming days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall or snowfall in higher altitudes are expected, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across various regions of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Friday (March 29).
The situation is set to escalate further, with IMD forecasting moderate rainfall across most parts of Arunachal Pradesh and certain areas of Sikkim and other Northeast states from March 30 to April 03.
Projections indicate that this wet spell will peak over the weekend, with heavy showers (64.5 mm-115.5 mm) anticipated for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on Saturday (March 30) and Monday (April 01).
Additionally, the first heavy rains of the summer (115.6 mm-204.5 mm) are predicted to lash Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on Sunday (March 31).
IMD has issued a yellow watch for Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur Mizoram and Tripura on Friday (March 29).
This alert will extend to the entire Northeast region, including Sikkim, from Saturday (March 30) to Sunday (March 31).
On Monday (April 01) and Tuesday (April 02), only Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya will remain under the alert.
Despite experiencing considerable rainfall this month, the region continues to grapple with significant rainfall deficits.
Between March 01 and 28, Arunachal Pradesh received only 101 mm of rainfall (32% below its normal of 149 mm), while Assam and Meghalaya collectively received 42 mm (29% below their normal of 60 mm), and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura received 25 mm collectively (45% below their normal of 46 mm).
