The Covid-19 situation in North Assam’s Lakhimpur district turned bad to worse as the death toll rose to 14 in the district with one more person succumbed to the disease on Monday.
30-year-old Mahesh Rathi, a resident of North Lakhimpur, died due to Covid-19 complications at Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.
Lakhimpur district health department officials said the district has 1,295 Covid positive patients with 732 active cases till Monday evening.
Monday witnessed a single-day spike of 134 positive cases in Lakhimpur district.
The Lakhimpur district administration has also declared three more containment zones as 49 persons were tested positive in three areas under Bogeenadi Police Station.
The containment zones are Bhimpora Balijan, Hechamora and Station Colony of Naharbari Revenue Village under Kadam Revenue Circle of the district.
Meanwhile, large crowds are seen in North Lakhimpur town during the pre-curfew hours as people rushed to the markets for shopping.
This overcrowding has led to massive traffic congestions in all major roads of the district headquarter of Lakhimpur.
Massive crowds are also seen in other towns of the district like Bihpuria, Laluk, Bogeenadi and Gogamukh threatening the likelihood of community spread across Lakhimpur.
The increased rush and overcrowding in North Lakhimpur is attributed to the closure of weekly haats in rural areas of the district.
