Mizoram health minister Dr Lalthangliana on Wednesday said the fact that earning the dubious distinction of being the highest AIDS prevalent state in the country is something indecent to Christianity.

Speaking at a music video releasing function here, Lalthangliana said Mizoram has the distinction of being the State with highest incidence in cancer and AIDS.

“The fact that we are at the top of other states in cancer and AIDS incident rate is nothing to be proud of but very indecent to be occurred in a Christian dominated state like us,” he said.

He said he has great concern about the growing spread of the menace and have taken massive to control it as the health minister.

He said people as a whole should give sincere concern to their lives.

The health minister on Tuesday informed the state legislature that Mizoram has topped the list in highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the country followed by Manipur and Nagaland.

He had said that as many as 21,538 people were infected with HIV positive in Mizoram since October 1990, when the first HIV positive case was detected in the state.

According to him, HIV positive case is highest among youths in the age group of 25-34 years which accounted for 42.38 per cent.

He had said that the government as well as churches and NGOs have been making massive collective effort to the rapid spread of AIDS, which is extremely alarming.

In January, the health minister also met officials of UNAIDS and sought their help to combat the growing AIDS prevalence in the State.
