Mizoram continues to register a spike in Covid-19 cases despite lockdown like curb imposed in Aizawl and other district headquarters since April 20.

The northeastern state reported 201 new cases in the last 24 hours with a positivity rate of 7 per cent, according to a statement by the state information and public relations department.

The total Covid-19 count has reached 8,377, of which 2,150 are active while 6,204 people have recovered from the infection.

The state has also reported 23 Covid-19 fatalities so far.

Of the fresh 201 cases, 50 were confirmed at Zoram Medical College’s RT-PCR laboratory, 9 at TrueNat facilities and 142 were detected through Rapid Antigen Test, the statement said.

143 cases were reported from Aizawl district, 37 from Lunglei district, 6 cases each from Kolasib and Champhai districts, 3 cases each from Serchhip and Lawngtlai districts, 2 from Mamit district and 1 case was reported from Saitual district, it said.

Two Border Security Force (BSF) jawans and one Indian Army personnel were among the newly infected people, it said.

Besides, more than 40 children, including a three-month-old baby, have also tested positive for the infection, the statement said.

While 17 patients have travel history, the rest were found to have locally contracted the virus.

Of the 201 patients, 83 have developed symptoms of Covid-19.

Mizoram has tested 3,39,955 samples till date.

State immunization officer Dr. Lalzawmi said that as many as 2,31,589 people have been administered the first dose of Covishield and 51,744 of them have received both doses of vaccine till Thursday.

The state is yet to launch vaccination for people in the age group of 18 and 44.

From April 20, the state government has imposed lockdown-like restrictions in Aizawl and district headquarters, which was followed by complete lockdown since May 10.

The total lockdown will remain in force till 4 am on May 17.
