The Meghalaya Government on Friday held the first meeting of the Games Organizing Committee for hosting the 2022 National Games in the State.

Interacting with media after the meeting, State Sports Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said acquisition of land is a big challenge, adding that the committee would overcome all hurdles.

He further said that the committee has identified some places and there are people who are coming forward to give their land for the big event.

Working president of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, John F Kharshiing, while highlighting that Meghalaya will witness a huge all round transformation, added that the games will also provide opportunity for the youths of Meghalaya.

Kharshiing also opined that the National Games venues can be transformed into tourist destinations, public parks and recreational areas after the Games.

Meanwhile, state Chief Minister Conrad Sangma laid emphasis on training local athletes to ensure medals for Meghalaya.

He added that the right support will be given to different disciplines.

Conrad also said that the National Games is one of the biggest events in the State and it will have the capacity to take the State forward in every aspect.

Conrad said apart from the requirements for hosting the Games, the state also requires airports, roads, water, power supply and hotels, among others.

The Chief Minister had recently met several union cabinet ministers and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss on the infrastructure required for hosting the National Games.

The government has also formed a group of ministers to discuss about the easing the traffic of main towns and cities headed by the Chief Minister and ministers not only to look after the decongestion from the National Games viewpoint but the traffic jam faced by the State.
