Personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday seized 58 country made boats carrying 45,000 kg of dry pea in Meghalaya along the Indo-Bangla border.

Alert troopers of the BSF intercepted the boats smuggling the huge consignment of dry pea, while they were entering the Indian Territory through the Lakra River along the Indo-Bangla border in Meghalaya.
The seized quantity of smuggled dry pea is worth over Rs 68 lakh.

“The boats were just about to unload the smuggling stuff carried by them and hand over the consignment to their Indian counterparts before they got nabbed by BSF near village Lakra basti,” the BSF said.
The BSF also said that due to recent seizures of huge consignments of dry pea along along the land routes prompted the smugglers to and syndicates to use the water route in a bid to avoid interception.
“Indo-Bangla border in Meghalaya consists of riverine, dense forests, hilly terrain and partially unfenced areas provide ideal conditions for all kind of smuggling,” said the BSF.
“Such type of smugglings have potential to distort the economy of any nation and may hit the livelihood of Indian producers,” the BSF said.
