Theatre personality of international repute Ratan Thiyam tested positive for Covid19 on Wednesday and has been hospitalised in Imphal on Wednesday.

A media report quoted the admission in-charge of the health directorate of Manipur government in Imphal West district, N Haraba as saying that the playwright and theatre director has been admitted to a multi- speciality hospital in Imphal after he tested positive for the disease.

He has been admitted to the ICU and is being administered oxygen, the top health official said.
Ratan Thiyam was honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1987.

Haraba informed that the doctors are treating the internationally-acclaimed theatre personality in the ICU and his condition is “stable”.

Ratan Thiyam is one of the leading figures of the ‘theatre of roots’ movement in Indian theatre, which started in the 1970s.

He is also known as Thiyam Nemai.

Ratan Thiyam, who has been able to draw the attention of all across the world due to his immense contributions to the field of theatre, is known for writing and staging plays that use ancient Indian theatre traditions and forms in a contemporary context.

He is often considered one of leading contemporary theatre gurus of the country.
