The State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) authorities in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh lodged an FIR at Basar Police Station complaining frequent cutting of optical fibre cable in between Basar and Dari area of the district.

“Aerial optical fibre cable (AOFC) is backbone of civil communication and any break of AOFC leads to total collapse of civil administration,” said the Junior Telecom Officer, Basar in his complaint.

Meanwhile, the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Basar has warned responsible persons to avoid such activities. The ADC also ordered Gaon Burahs to keep vigil in their respective jurisdictions.

Similar cases are reported from various parts of the country from time to time.

In similar such incident, miscreants stole underground BSNL cables worth Rs 15 lakh from a manhole near the Phase 3/5 light point on the night intervening December 12 and December 13 at Mohali in Punjab. The theft disrupted broadband service of over 2,000 connections in the adjoining areas.

“Thieves allegedly stole four 300-metre-long cables from the manhole, which is close to foot over bridge in the Phase 3B1 market and barely 100 metres from the DSP’s office.  This is the second theft of cables in a week’s time. Late on December 8 night, thieves had stolen four 10-metre-long wires from the same area,” stated a report published in The Tribune on December 15, 2017.

An eyewitness said the thieves make way with the wires in the garb of conducting repair work for the BSNL.
