The Krishnaguru– famed Nasatra in Barpeta district of Assam is going to be a green and polythene-free village soon.
Brand Ambassador of the Forest and Environment Department, Ananda Khataniar, who is an avid nature lover and an employee of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LICI), Pathsala branch, who is the director of Green Mission, Bajali formally initiated the process of Nasatra becoming a green, pollution-free and polythene-free village on Monday.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion at the Krishnaguru Adhyatmik Viswavidyalay, Khataniar said that he had selected the village due to its national importance.
He expressed confidence that the villagers would discard plastic and make the village a polythene-free one.
He urged the villagers to use paper and cotton bags and speculated that through this ‘green revolution’ Nasatra will be able to occupy a significant position in the global tourism map.
Khataniar, who is a crusader against pollution, informed that his earlier effort have fructified at Belana, a village under Bajali sub-division of Barpeta district, which has already been declared a polythene-free village.
He also informed that a self-help group of the village has already begun production of paper bags for use in marketing, which has been well accepted by the inhabitants of the village.
Speaking on the occasion, Rasmirekha Devi, Circle Officer of Sarthebari Revenue Circle, who planted saplings along with Dhiraj Kumar Sarma, an officer of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on the occasion, urged the villagers to be cautious about the use of polythene, which is primarily responsible for air and land pollution.
Rupam Hazarika, officer in charge of Sarthebari police station narrated in brief how one can make the earth green and a better place to live in through plantation of saplings.
Several villagers also spoke in the meeting and urged their brethren to set an example before other villages by making it green and polythene-free.
It may be mentioned here that an awareness meeting held on this topic at the Krishnaguru Adhyatmik Viswavidyalay on June 24 was very well attended.
The meeting overwhelmingly welcomed the proposal of Ananda Khataniar to make Nasatra a green and polythene-free village. The humble beginning which was made yesterday was the result of a resolution adopted in the aforementioned meeting of June 24.
