The Assam government on Tuesday suspended three police officials in connection with the custodial death of a youth at Borhalla area in upper Assam’s Jorhat district.

30-year-old Jayanta Bora, who had been picked up by a joint team of the police and the Army on the night of Sunday,  died in custody on Monday morning.

The state government has also announced a high level probe into the incident.

The enquiry will now be conducted by Commissioner secretary to the government of Assam Revenue and Disaster Management Lalit Gogoi.

The government has further announced an exgratia of Rs 6 lakh to the family and a job to a family member of Jayanta.

A team led by state minister for Agriculture Atul Bora on Tuesday visited the house of Jayanta Bora along with Jorhat Lok Sabha MP Topon Gogoi and minister Jogen Mohan.

They assured the family that the case would be tried in a fast track court.

On Monday Jorhat deputy commissioner Roshni A Korati had announced that a probe would be conducted by additional deputy commissioner Tapan Gohain.

The police officials who have been suspended are Titabar subdivional police officer (SDPO) A K Hojai, Borholla police station officer in charge Mintu Gogoi and Bokajan police outpost in charge Gopal Doley.

The body of Jayanta Bora was accepted by the family for cremation following the assurances by the ministers.

Earlier in the day, DC Korati had visited the family to persuade them to take the body but the parents of Jayanta and the villagers had refused to accept it calling for the presence of Borholla OC Mintu Handique.

Korati said that apprehending a law and order situation she had brought the body back to the morgue at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.
