Guwahati: Noted academician Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Guwahati University.
Mahanta, a renowned political scientist, previously served as the academic advisor to the Assam government from 2021 to February 2024.
Before his stint in government, Mahanta was a professor in the Political Science department at Guwahati University itself.
He holds an MA in Political Science from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and a PhD from Guwahati University.
His academic pursuits also led him to the University of California, Berkeley, where he completed a two-year course on Peace, Conflict Resolution, and Policy Studies as a Rotary World Peace Fellow.
Mahanta is the author of several acclaimed books, including “Confronting the State: ULFA’s quest for Sovereignty” and “Citizenship Debate over NRC and CAA.”
His scholarly work on the region’s complex political landscape is widely recognized.
