A woman has spotted a leopard at the Jalan Nagar Tea Estate in Dibrugarh while she was passing by the area.

The woman clicked a photo of the leopard after spotting it on Tuesday, which has gone viral on various social media platforms.

“Leopards generally stray into tea garden areas in search of food. The forest department was informed about the matter,” said a resident of Dibrugarh.

Due to shrinking forest covers, leopards often stray into to human settlement in search of food.

“For the past few years we have been spotting a leopard in the same location. The leopard took away the dogs from one of my neighbours’ house,” said Arijit Dasgupta, a resident of Jalan Nagar area.

“About three years back a black panther was spotted in the Jalan Nagar Tea Estate, after which it was never again seen,” he added.

A forest official said, “The local residents informed us about the leopard and we are trying to locate and tranquilize the animal.”
