Darrang Police managed to avert a blueprint of the ULFA(I) to recruit new cadres and carry out extortion in Darrang and Udalguri districts.

A total of 7 persons, including a pro-talk leader of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), have also been arrested by police in this connection.

Talking to media persons at his office chamber in Mangaldai on Thursday evening, Darrang superintendent of police Amrit Bhuyan said: “The ULFA (I) has prepared a blueprint targeting youths from the economically poorer section to be recruited in the organization.”

“This came to light after the arrest of Khanindra Kalita alias Jyotish (29), Hiren Kalita (35), both residents of Kamargaon village and Dharmendra Deka (26) of Naptapara village, all under Sipajhar PS of the district,” Bhuyan said.

“They had direct links with the senior ULFA(I) leaders in Myanmar. On the basis of their statements, we have arrested two youths, namely Bolen Deka (38) and Dhrubajyoti Baisya (37) from areas under Harisinga PS in Udalguri district,” said superintendent of police Bhuyan.

The week-long investigation was carried out under the supervision of the additional superintendent of police, Ujjal Pratim Baruah and deputy superintendent of police Mamani Hazarika.

“The investigation led to the arrest of pro-talk ULFA leader Prasanna Saikia alias Prasenjit Chaliha (58) of Kabikara village under Mangaldai PS and Ashim Adhikari alias Raj Dutta (27) of Pandu under Jalukbari PS on Thursday,” he said.

Superintendent of police Bhuyan claimed blueprint was readied to recruit four youths within a short time and take them for training through Sivasagar in Magh Bihu, the Darrang district police chief said.

Preparations are afoot to serve extortion notices to prominent businessmen and industrialists of the area, he said.

Police have seized some blank pads in the letterhead of ULFA(I) and seven mobile handsets from their possession, the SP added.
