Assam transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary held a webinar to review the works of Inland Water Transport (IWT) on Wednesday.

While reviewing the various activities and programmes of IWT, Patowary said Inland Water Transport plays an important role in transporting passengers and goods in the State.

He stressed on prioritizing passengers’ safety at any cost and instructed all the employees of IWT to keep strict vigil on it.

Patowary further directed to extend the last date of registration and availing benefits under Jibondinga Scheme till August 31, 2020.

Assam Inland Water Transport Development Society is implementing the Assam Inland Water Transport Project with funding from World Bank.

As part of the project a scheme has been prepared for boat owners named, ‘Jibondinga’.

The scheme aims at providing marine engines for boats registered in the Directorate of IWT, Assam at subsidized rates of 70 per cent with additional incentives of five per cent and 10 per cent for women entrepreneurs and Women Self Help Groups respectively for which capacity building will also be a part of the scheme.

In addition the AIWTD Society will provide improved safety gears like life jackets, fire-fighting equipment and GPS with additional free insurance and warranty for three years.

Patowary appealed to all private boat owners and operators to avail the benefits of incentives under the scheme.
