Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal would lay the foundation stone of a martyrs’ memorial at the Swahid Smarak Udyan at West Boragaon in Guwahati on December 10.

December 10 is observed as Martyrs’ Day by the Assam government in respect of the martyrs of Assam Agitation.

On the same day, an informative book encompassing the events of the Assam Movement leading to its culmination with the historic signing of Assam Accord in 1985 would also be released.

Chief Minister Sonowal on Friday directed the Assam Accord Implementation Department, in a review meeting, to take necessary steps in this regard for immortalising the martyrs’ sacrifices.

Directing the PWD to expediently complete the formalities regarding the construction of the SwahidSmarak, Sonowal urged the department to ensure that the memorial is unique and exceptional which would be able to catch the attention of the people.

It is to be mentioned that the State Government plans to implement the project in an area of 100 bighas of land with a total expenditure of Rs 47 crores.

On the other hand, Sonowal directed the editorial committee to exhaustively include all aspects of Assamese nationalism in the book to be published, covering the events of Assam Movement, so that it can be used as research material.

Sonowal also directed the Assam Accord Implementation Department to publish a booklet highlighting the steps taken by the present state government since 2016 to implement Clause 6 of Assam Accord.

Saying that the State Government was committed to safeguarding the interest and self-respect of Assamese people through the implementation of the Accord in letter and spirit, Sonowal stated that the government was taking all steps to take forward the institutes set up as results of the Accord.

Saying that the construction work of a multi-modal logistics park would begin on October 20, which would come up at the site of defunct Ashok Paper Mill at Jogighopa in Bongaigaon, Sonowal expressed optimism that the park, ten times bigger than the paper mill, would play a pivotal role in boosting the export-import sector while helping in rapid industrialisation of the state along with employment generation.
