Assam chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday urged the people to take leadership in the preservation and promotion of tribal art & culture.

He made this call while attending the inaugural programme of the three-day conference of tribal leaders of North East titled “Voice of North East” organized by Janajati Faith & Culture Protection Forum at Rani Lakshmi Bai National Institute of Physical Education, Tepesia at Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati.

The Chief Minister said that tribal art & culture has greatly enriched Indian culture and civilization and it is very important to protect, preserve and promote tribal art & culture.

He said that along with the tribal people, the non-tribals must also take leadership in its promotion and the state government would continue extending all needful support in this regard.

Sarma further said that considering the significance of tribal art, culture, faith, customs and traditions in the growth of India’s civilization, the state government established a new department named, “Indigenous Faith & Culture”.

He further informed that initially 100 crore has been earmarked for the department in the current budget and the government intended to increase budget allocation up to 500 crore in the next five years.
