The Assam Police have seized 32 illegal arms and freezed over 20,000 licensed arms across the State since February 1 this year. The police have also executed over 6,000 non-bailable warrants during this period.

Nodal officer of the Assam Police and Additional DGP (Law and Order), Mukesh Agarwala said this on Monday adding that the freezing of licensed arms were done as part of the instruction of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

“The ECI held a video conference with us and instructed us to freeze the licensed arms even before the announcement of dates for the Lok Sabha polls. Accordingly, we have started the process from January 1 and till now we have freezed over 20,000 licensed arms across the state,” Agarwala said.

“There are a little over 25,000 licensed arms in the State and efforts are on by police to freeze all of them before the polls. Apart from this we have seized 32 illegal arms during this period,” Agarwala said.

“Further, we have also executed 6,300 non bailable warrants from February 1 till date. Efforts are also on to execute about 1,400 non bailable warrants which are pending,” he said adding that number of warrants, however, differ as new NBWs are being issued by the court almost regularly.
