Joint operations conducted by the Army and the police in Kokrajhar district of Assam of late have led to the arrest of several National Democratic Front of Boroland (Songbijit) (NDFB) (S) hawks.

Rajen Singh, Superintendent of Police (SP), Kokrajhar, informed on Thursday that acting on a tip-off given by the arrested anti-talks NDFB (S) cadre of 39th batch Dikum Basumatary @ B Dehrasart, 27, son of  Sagarshing Basumatary of village Baitabil under Serfanguri Police Station and Overground Worker  (OGW)
Jibiar Basumatary (21), son of Abi Basumatary of Narapuli village in Alipurduar, West Bengal; a joint operation was launched by the Kokrajhar district police and 12 Sikh Li Army on July 25 last in Khalasi area, north west of Jharbari under Serfanguri Police Station and multiple ambushes were laid in the jungle area.

Singh further informed that at around 4 am, the ambush party noticed suspicious movement of one person. The ambush party challenged the suspected person, but he tried to flee. However, the suspect was apprehended and after extensive interrogation, the identity of the person was revealed as Deepak Brahma@ B Daphungwn, 28, son of Rasam Brahma of Bongshijhora village under Bogribari Police Station in Kokrajhar. It was found that Deepak was a hardcore NDFB(S) cadre of the 39th batch.

One hand grenade of Chinese origin and one Intex Multimedia mobile phone with three Vodafone SIM cards were recovered from his possession. The Army and police team combine further conducted ‘flush-out’ operations in the area (read as per hints given by the apprehended cadre) and the following weapons were recovered from beneath the ground: One 5.56mm M-16 rifle (made in USA) bearing body No. 3231936 with one magazine and 11 (Eleven) 5.56 mm live rounds. Singh said that the arrested NDFB (S) rebel has been found to be involved in extortion, recruitment of new cadres and other subversive activities in Kokrajhar district. “He has also been continuously trying to carry out disruptive activities in the run-up to Independence Day 2018. Further investigations are on,” the SP stated.
