New Delhi has fenced a total length of 2778.66 kms India-Bangladesh border to stop all possible illegal infiltration from Bangladesh.

Disclosing this in the Parliament DoNER Minister Jitendra Singh has said that the government has adopted a multi-pronged approach for security arrangements at the borders, which includes deployment of Border Guarding Force (BGF), construction of border fence, construction of border roads, installation of floodlights, construction of Border Out Posts (BOPs), introduction of hi-tech surveillance equipment, besides identifying vulnerable BOPs.

“As per the information available of the 3326 kms of sanctioned length for fencing along Indo-Bangladesh Border, 2778.66 kms have been completed,” Singh said .

The disclosure assumes significance as the government had already initiated strong steps to finalise the National Register of Citizen (NRC) to detect the illegal foreigners.

The Minister said that 85.64 kms of roads have been constructed along the Indo – Bangladesh border, since last three years till date. The minister further said that major emphasis has been given for an inclusive growth of the region.

“Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan (CTDP) for the North Eastern Region (NER) at an estimated cost of Rs.5336.18 crore under which USOF has signed an agreement with BSNL to install 2817 mobile towers for providing mobile coverage in 4119 uncovered villages of Arunachal Pradesh and two districts of Assam at an estimated cost of Rs.2258 crore; Broad Gauging & Capital Connectivity Rail Projects; Comprehensive Scheme for Strengthening of Transmission & Distribution Systems (CSST&DS) in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim at an estimated cost of Rs.4754.42 crore; Bharatmala Pariyojana; North East Road Sector Development Scheme (NERSDS),” he said.

Under Bharatmala Pariyojana, road stretches aggregating to about 5301 km in northeastern region have been approved for improvement. Of this, 3246 km road length has been approved for development of Economic Corridor in North East.

In addition to the efforts made by infrastructure ministries and ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) through its schemes of Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR)-State, North Eastern Council and North East Road Sector Development Scheme (NERSDS), have also taken steps to bridge infrastructure gaps in North Eastern Region.
