Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy urged the youth to remain focused on achieving their goals and take advantage of the potential in tourism just as the people in Goa.

Addressing the 25th convocation of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) at Mawlai Umshing on Wednesday, the Governor said, “Youth is a time for opportunities. As you walk out of the portals of the University, remember that you remain focused and committed to your goals and tread the straight and narrow path in life.”

He said that in Goa, people depend on tourism for livelihood but despite the potential, even 5 per cent of it has not been able to tap in the North East.

The Governor hoped that Meghalaya and other states in the Northeast would also take advantage of the tourism potential.

He congratulated the students and scholars who have completed their respective academic program and urged them to utilise their talents and capabilities to work for the betterment and overall progress of the society.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma exhorted the young people to channelise their energy in a constructive manner and contribute to the positive growth of the State and the country.

“As one of the youngest nations in the world, the strength of our nation lies in the hands of our youth. The onus is on all the young people to utilise this power and be a catalyst for positive change”, the Chief Minister said.

Stressing on the importance of entrepreneurship to push the economy forward, the Chief Minister urged the young graduates to be “job givers instead of job seekers” as creating job opportunities is a challenge for all governments.

“It is important that all young minds look towards entrepreneurship and start taking calculated risk,” he said.

The Chief Minister also spoke at length the need for greater collaboration between the Government and academic and research institutes for better policy making and greater innovation in the implementation of programs and projects of the government.

“The Government has taken the initiative to collaborate with research and educational institutes including NEHU in the field of agriculture, finance and other sectors. Through the use of right technology and scientific methods, we are being able to add value to our products”, the Chief Minister said.

Stating that the North East has abundant resources, the Chief Minister encouraged the young people to take advantage of these vast opportunities.

“It is important to have a purpose in life and once you do, you will have all the passion and motivation to overcome all that life throws at you and emerge victorious,” the Chief Minister concluded.
