In a shocking incident, a 32-year-old man was arrested in Guwahati on Saturday after he was allegedly caught masturbating while making indecent gestures at two young women travelling in a city bus.
Police officials said the man, identified as Abdul Ali, was arrested after the two young women with the help of a fellow passenger handed him over to Paltan Bazar police here.
Paltan Bazar police have registered a case (1142/18) against the accused under section 354 A (Sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment) and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC.
The incident took place around 1.30 pm in the Adabari bound moving bus on GS Road in Ulubari area in Guwahati.
According to the two women, they saw the accused, a resident of Kalaigaon in Udalguri district, who was sitting opposite to them in the bus, exposed his private part and was rubbing it.
One of the two girls said they brought the incident to the co-passengers’ notice, but they ignored it. “Nobody, except a man, came forward to help us. Everyone was sitting on their seats,” she said.
The young woman further said that she had also beaten her up before handing him over to police.
