In a midnight raid on Thursday, Manipur Police detained five professors of Manipur University and at least 90 students of the University. Internet services in several parts of Imphal have been suspended following the crackdown.

Police even resorted to fire tear gas shell inside the University and hostel campus that left several injured. Many students were preparing for examinations.

Later police blocked the entry of the students, teachers and staff into the University campus.

It is learnt that those detained by police include president of the Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) besides other office bearers of the Union.  It was the MUSU that spearheaded the stir against the Vice Chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey. MUSU accused the VC of committing financial irregularities and mismanagement.

The raid was carried out by police following a complaint lodged by Pro- Vice Chancellor K Y Singh against the students at Singjamei police station.

Professor K Yugindro Singh was appointed to the post of Pro Vice Chancellor after Pandey was suspended by the HRD Ministry per the order no. MU/VC/ADM/2018/PVC-1 dated September 10.
