The Manipur University (MU) has been formally reopened on Thursday with the temporary suspension of 85 days old shutdown strike which had paralysed the functioning of university and many affiliated colleges.
Many students and teachers including students from affiliated institutions turned up at MU campus at Canchipur, about seven km south of Imphal for their respective academic activities.

Though some of the departments resumed their classes, the University authority is yet to make any announcement for rescheduling the suspended semester examinations of more than 30 departments.
Now the Vice Chancellor in charge and other concerned parties of the University are expected to hold meetings for the restoration of the academic atmosphere in the University sooner or later, a senior official of the examination section of the University said.
Meanwhile Director Prof Sh Dorendrajit Singh of Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the University has been assigned to perform the duties of Registrar (in charge) for 30 days in addition to his normal duties with immediate effect, according to a notification issued by Vice Chancellor in charge on Thursday.
“The earlier incumbent Prof M Shyamkesho Singh shall works in the parent department during this period,” the notification added.
Manipur University Students Union president M Dayaman also shared a similar sentiment when this reporter visited the University campus on Thursday afternoon.
However, some university students including the PG students of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences who turned up to collect the certificates for their final examinations held in May 2018 went back empty handed after the university authority is yet to prepare things in order.
The Vice Chancellor in charge of the University, Prof W Vishwanath could not be contacted for his comment.
On Wednesday, the Manipur University community announced to ‘temporarily suspend’ its shutdown strike after the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) approved the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed among the community, the HRD and the State on August 16 besides considering the sufferings of the students’ community.
However the president of Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) had said that the university community will stick to the demand for removal of Vice Chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey.
The MUSU had launched an indefinite shutdown on May 30 last, demanding the ouster of Vice Chancellor Pandey, accusing him of financial and administrative irregularities, which the latter has denied.
As per the MoA, the three-member fact finding committee will be reconstituted as an ‘independent two-member inquiry committee’, led by former acting Chief Justice, High Court of Meghalaya, T Nandakumar Singh.
It also agreed that Pandey will be on leave during the period of inquiry and until follow up action is taken, preferably within a period of 15 days.
