Agartala: The Congress party in Tripura made an urgent appeal to governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu on Thursday (July 18), seeking his intervention to restore democratic and fundamental rights, which they claim are currently absent in the state.
A delegation of six Congress members, including Lok Sabha MPs Gaurav Gogoi and Tariq Anwar, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Tripura Congress president Asish Kumar Saha, and AICC national secretary Szarita Laithphlang, met the Tripura governor at Raj Bhawan.
Speaking to the media, MP Tariq Anwar stated that the delegation briefed the Tripura governor on the current situation in Tripura, especially in the context of the upcoming Panchayat elections.
“We requested the governor to intervene to protect the democratic and fundamental rights of the people and to ensure peaceful panchayat elections,” he said.
“The government must take measures to allow all political parties to participate in the democratic process. He assured us that he would look into the matter. We also highlighted recent incidents and asked him to restore law and order so that voters can safely reach polling booths. We will prepare a detailed memorandum to submit to the Governor,” Anwar said.

Gaurav Gogoi, who serves as the deputy leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha, claimed that law and order in Tripura have completely collapsed.
“We brought several issues to the Governor’s attention, expressing our concerns about the Gandtwisa incident and the situation in Manipur, urging him to prevent similar events in Tripura. We requested a proper investigation and justice for the family of the youth who died in a group attack, as well as for those who lost their shops and homes. It is clear that democracy and the Constitution are under constant attack,” Gogoi stated.
He also alleged that political candidates for the panchayat polls are being prevented from submitting their nominations.
“We have informed the Tripura police, but they have not taken any action regarding the election-related violence. CWC member Sudip Barman has also been attacked. India is a model of democracy, and we urged the Governor to uphold this model in Tripura. We hope for concrete action in the coming days,” Gogoi added.
