Meghalaya Erpakon village

SHILLONG: In a bid to maintain peace and harmony in Erpakon village under Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya, following the murder of a local resident, the district’s deputy commissioner organized a peace meeting, inviting all involved parties.

However, the Dorbar Shnong of Erpakon village declined to attend the peace meeting, heightening tensions in the community.

The deputy commissioner of Ri Bhoi district in Meghalaya had invited representatives from RN Sharma Hotel, building owners, and the Dorbar Shnong to discuss the situation following the death of Kyrmen Lyngdoh Nonglait, who was allegedly murdered by a worker from RN Sharma Hotel.

Despite efforts to foster dialogue and reconciliation, the Dorbar Shnong chose to boycott the meeting, reaffirming their decision to evict all non-locals and prohibit them from working or conducting business within Erpakon village.

Led by headman M Thongni and village secretary Lambor Kharshilot, the Dorbar Shnong held a meeting earlier in the day to deliberate on the deputy commissioner’s invitation.

During this meeting, the village leadership unanimously decided not to attend the peace talks.

They emphasized their stance to prevent any non-local individuals from residing, working, or running businesses in Erpakon village.

Lambor Kharshilot stated that the decision to evict non-locals is comprehensive, including those working as daily labourers or operating businesses such as RN Sharma Hotel.

He stressed that this policy applies uniformly to all non-local individuals.

It may be mentioned here that

Dorbar Shnong (general body) of Erpakon village in Meghalaya has decided to evict all non-tribals residing or working within its jurisdiction.

This decision follows the brutal murder of 38-year-old local resident Kyrmen Lyngdoh Nonglait by a non-tribal person, employed at a hotel on May 11.

The Dorbar Shnong has granted a month’s notice for all non-tribals to vacate the village.

Additionally, the body has mandated that all hotels and dhabas operating within the village must employ only local residents.

The tragic incident, which resulted this drastic measure, involved both the victim and the accused being intoxicated, leading to a violent altercation.

The accused allegedly struck the victim on the head with a plank, causing severe injuries that led to his death in the hospital.

The Meghalaya police arrested the accused the following day.

Furthermore, the Dorbar Shnong has resolved not to issue any no-objection certificates (NOC) for non-tribals seeking to operate businesses within the village’s jurisdiction from now on.
