AIZAWL: The Mizoram government is considering the corporatization of the state’s power department to enhance efficiency, as disclosed during the assembly session on Wednesday (March 06).

In response to a query from Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) member H Ginzalala, Mizoram power minister F Rodingliana outlined plans to reorganize the department into three distinct segments: transmission, generation, and distribution, with the aim of corporatization.

Additionally, the government intends to embark on the construction of three dams to bolster electricity generation.

These include a 150-MW hydroelectric project on the Tuivai River in Saitual district near the Manipur border, a 120-MW unit on the Tlawng River, and a 24-MW project on the Tuirini River near Sesawng village in Aizawl district of Mizoram.

Previously, Rodingliana had announced the Mizoram government’s proposal to establish four additional solar power plants, collectively capable of generating 45 MW of electricity.

He also highlighted the significant expenditure of Rs 33-37 crore per month on purchasing power from external sources, emphasizing the state’s requirement of 156 MW during peak hours.

Presently, Mizoram operates 15 small hydroelectric projects, yielding a combined output of 38.55 MW.

However, the Mizoram minister noted that power generation levels are subject to frequent fluctuations influenced by prevailing weather conditions.
