MUMBAI: Renowned Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, known for unforgettable classics such as “Chitthi aayi hai”, has passed away after battling a long illness.

The development was confirmed by his family on Monday (February 26).

He was 72 years old.

“With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padma Shri Pankaj Udhas on 26 February due to a prolonged illness,” read a statement from the Udhas family.

Pankaj Udhas passed away at Breach Candy hospital around 11 am on Monday (February 26).

He was acclaimed for his playback singing in Hindi films such as Naam, Saajan and Mohra.

Last rites of Pankaj Udhas will be held on Tuesday (February 27).

The singer is survived by his two daughters, Nayaab and Rewa Udhas. 

Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam condoled the demise of Pankaj Udhas.

“One of the most important part of my childhood, is lost today. Shri Pankaj Udhas ji, I will miss you forever. My heart cries knowing that you are no more. Thank you for being there. Om Shanti,” said Sonu Nigam.

Chitthi Aayi Hai, Chandi Jaisa Rang Tera, Thodi Thodi Piya Karo, Ek Taraf Uska Ghar and Aaj Jinke Kareeb Hote Hai were some of Pankaj Udhas’s famous compositions.
