Former Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma has said that the Congress party in the state must take cognisance of the mistakes it committed and initiate course correction.
Mukul Sangma said this while playing down speculations of him quitting the Congress and joining or forming a new political party.
“I have been associated with the Congress for a long time. Have represented the party from Ampati. Now we must take cognizance of the mistakes and go for course correction,” the former Meghalaya chief minister said.
Speculations of Mukul Sangma quitting the Congress party have been running high ever since he met TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata on Tuesday.
“I do have friends in other parties, but the focus now should be on resolving issues that we have within the four walls of the party (Congress),” Mukul Sangma said while briefing the media in Shillong on Thursday.

Although Mukul Sangma has downplayed any possibility of him quitting the Congress, according to a News18 report, Mukul Sangma is likely to consider floating his own regional party.
“We are trying to get Dr Mukul Sangma as this will help us flourish our party in Northeast… but he is very reluctant. He wanted to have a regional party where he can unify the three tribes of Meghalaya,” a TMC leader and minister in Mamta Banerjee government was quoted as saying by News18.
