Transgenders and destitute in Guwahati have got much-needed help during lockdown from a local NGO, which provided dry ration to about 150 such persons living in the city.
“During the current lockdown situation, the transgenders have lost all possibilities of earning a livelihood. We, therefore, are trying to extend help to them as much as we can. We are providing dry rations to around 150 transgenders and baggers,” said Banashree Goswami, who founded Parichay Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, to help transgenders and marginalized people in Guwahati.
“The members of the transgender community are left segregated in Guwahati even during the lockdown period due to social ostracism and taboo. In the current lockdown situation, they cannot indulge in begging or such other work. As a result, they have faced inexplicable hardships. Hence, we have decided to offer our helping hands to them,” said Ishanu Kalita, an office-bearer of the organization.
On Saturday, the foundation distributed dry ration packets to them at the Ganeshguri area in Guwahati.
