The Serchhip battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles on Friday seized nine cases of cigarettes of foreign origin at Chhungte in Mizoram’s Champhai district.

The cigarettes were seized during an operation conducted by a joint team of Assam Rifles jawans and the Champhai Customs Preventive Force after receiving specific inputs.

The Customs Preventive Force also detained an individual in connection with this.

The seized cigarettes are estimated to be worth Rs 11,70,000 in the market.

The Assam Rifles have been conducting several such operations with the Mizoram police and other departments of the state.

Smuggling activities mostly takes place along the Indo-Myanmar international border in Mizoram.

Meanwhile, the Churachandpur battalion of Assam Rifles recently apprehended a cadre of the People’s Liberation Army of Manipur in Valpakot village in Churachandpur district of Manipur.

Jawans of the paramilitary force conducted a search operation in the village after receiving specific information about the whereabouts of the cadre, who was active in the area.
