Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections 2021, the sitting MLA of the Kamalpur Assembly constituency, Satyabrat Kalita on Saturday resigned from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and he is likely to join the Congress.

Kalita took the decision to resign from the AGP after he was denied a party ticket to contest from the constituency, which he is currently representing.

Diganta Kalita has been declared as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Kamalpur seat.

BJP and AGP will jointly fight the ensuing Assam Assembly elections 2021.

Kalita resigned from the AGP after meeting party president and agriculture minister Atul Bora.

Talking to the media, Kalita said, “I have resigned from the AGP after meeting president, Atul Bora,” adding, “I will reveal about my new political journey tomorrow.”

However, AGP president Atul Bora said his party would go for a friendly contest in the Kamalpur Assembly constituency where BJP has fielded Diganta Kalita.

According to reports, Satyabrat Kalita is likely to join the Congress party to fight the ensuing Assembly election from Kamalpur seat.

He has reportedly engaged in a meeting with the Congress party leaders at a city hotel.
